5 Best Trainers For The 2021 Kentucky Derby

| March 21, 2021

The horses are not the only superstars during a horse racing event. The trainers who honed these champions are also in the limelight. The Kentucky Derby race is no different, as this is where most of the best trainers can be seen.

Even sportsbooks allow bettors to bet against the trainer they think will win the race. Trainers can have multiple horses participate in a single event, and the more entries they have, the more chances they will win.

Here are the top five best trainers that everyone is talking about in this year’s Kentucky Derby race. If you are planning to bet on the best trainer, you should choose between these five.

Bob Baffert

Trainer Bob Baffert unsurprisingly landed at the top of the list. This is due to his multiple achievements in the past, including the Hall of Fame and Eclipse award for Best Trainer, which he won multiple times. There is something about Bob Baffert that he regularly provides a champion horse into the industry.

Baffert has already achieved a lot in his horse training career, and he is not yet done. He continues to search and train horses that he knows will give him more awards in the future. And truly enough, this year’s Kentucky horse race, he had produced four great horses who are constantly coming up on the best horses list.

Bob Baffert’s horses running on The Road to the Kentucky Derby are Life is Good, Concert Tour, Medina Spirit, and Spielberg. He still has one horse who has the probability of contending for the Derby, which is Freedom Fighter.

Brad Cox

Another popular name in the industry is Brad Cox, who also won the Eclipse Award for best trainer in 2020. After Baffert, Cox is the next big thing in the horse training industry as he also provided great achiever horses.

This year he entered three of his trainees into the Road to the Kentucky Derby, Essential Quality, Caddo River, and Mandalore. Cox also has a fourth horse, Prate, who will likely also run in the Derby. However, Prate is still a probability while the rest already qualified to compete for the race.

Essential Quality has been the heavy favorite to win the Kentucky Derby as he is the first horse to earn the highest points and stayed at the top of the leaderboard for months. He is also the winner of the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile in 2020. The rest of Cox’s qualifiers are also included in the best horses’ list to enter the Kentucky Derby.

Cox already has a passion for horse racing since he was young. As per his childhood friend Rob Radcliffe, Cox already started to study horse racing from the racing form from those self-betting machines even at a young age. He said they would pick those forms out of the garbage, and Cox brought them straight home and started studying.

This is the very reason why Cox is the second-best trainer this year. He will be the one who will follow Bob Baffert’s footsteps in the industry, Brad Cox is still young, and he still has a long way to go, but for sure, he will be one of the best. Watch out for him in next year’s Kentucky Derby as well.

Shug McGaughey

Another Hall Of Famer whose trainee currently topped the leaderboard is Claud “Shug” McGaughey III. McGaughey only has one entry for the 2021 Kentucky Derby, Greatest Honour, who tied with Baffert’s Life is Good with 60 points.

Greatest Honour won two of the prep races he joined, the Holy Bull Stakes last January and the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes in February. These races are the ones who earned him his 60 points.

McGaughey is known to only run the best ones into the Kentucky Derby. Despite McGaughey’s multiple achievements, he only ran a total of eight horses in the Kentucky Derby during his entire career. He may be a picky trainer, but at least he won’t throw in a horse that he thinks won’t win the race.

Chad Brown

The four-time consecutive Eclipse Outstanding Trainer awardee and a trainer who trained multiple winners in the horse racing industry are enlisted trainers to be the best this year.

Brown has two horses currently running in the Road to the Kentucky Derby Highly Motivated and Risk Taking. He had a promising future as he is a Shug McGaughey apprentice. Now he is one of McGaughey’s top contenders for the upcoming Kentucky Derby.

Steve Asmussen

2016 Hall of Fame Awardee and two-year Eclipse Outstanding Trainer Awardee from 2008 to 2009, Steve Asmussen’s Midnight Bourbon is currently on the 8th spot in the Road Kentucky Derby leaderboard owning 26 points.

Asmussen is the second trainer in history who trained over 9,000 winners, and now he is continuing to increase this number which is not impossible for him to achieve. With Asmussen’s ability to train winners, everyone should be looking out for Midnight Bourbon in the 2021 Kentucky Derby race.

Takeaway

Borrowing money has become one of the immediate sources of additional finances, but it’s not all the time that every loan application is a success. Unfortunately, some applications get turned down. But some steps can help that being sorted out, which we thoroughly laid out above. Now that you know how to have a higher chance of approval, you need to make sure that you have maintained your paying capacity to keep your credit score clean, and you won’t be deep in debt.
