Villagebet selection Pierrette scores at Randwick

The Gai Waterhouse-trained 2YO filly Pierrette gave Villagebet punters the best possible start by scoring in the first race at Randwick on Spring Champion Stakes day. The filly was selected straight out by Villagebet and paid $18 for the win, exactly matching the all-time longest-priced winning selection made when Shoreham saluted at Flemington last year.

The Gai Waterhouse factor was a key ingredient in our selection of the filly. “The education process makes a difference,” Waterhouse’s foreman Mark Newnham said.

“We’ve got out own breaker, who does a really good job, and when they come to the races they behave themselves, they jump well and do the little things right.

“Today she made her own luck and the filly that raced outside her bounced and gave herself a chance also. It just goes to show if you bring them here early in the season and they’re well educated it gets you nine-tenths of the way – the rest of it is sheer talent.”

Pierrette launched out of the stalls and found plenty in the straight to sink Gary Portelli’s luckless Sebring Sun.

Stablemate Flamboyant Lass, which sat outside Pierrette in the run, kept bobbing to edge Ideal Express out of third.

Ask Winona Costin and she thought she would struggle to beat one of Pierrette’s stablemates home, let alone all her other rivals. But where there is an early season two-year-olds’ race, Gai Waterhouse is always going to be in the finish.

“They thought she was the weakest out of the lot today and she came out and blew the others away,” Costin said after her filly, unfancied out of the Waterhouse trio, led from barrier to box in the Randwick opener.

“She’s very quick out of the gates and does most things right. She’s still a little bit green, but she’s quick and that’s what wins these two-year-old races. I galloped her on the course proper not too long ago and she really impressed me that day.

“I gave her her first trial and she was doing things wrong and I knew she would have some improvement in her.”

And there is sure to be plenty of improvement in the teenage apprentice, too. Despite the season being a little more than two months old, Costin has already racked up 10 city winners with Waterhouse’s backing.

If she can sustain the same frenzied pace of winners she will go close to matching Tye Angland’s title-winning haul of 60 for the season, the most since a dashing young Wayne Harris rode 89 in the 1980-81 season.

“Gai did say if she won today she might even take her down to Melbourne. She thinks she is the right type for using her speed in those races down there and might pick up a bit of black type.”
