Winx blazes in Chipping Norton Stakes

| April 17, 2018

Winx’ winning sequence continues on..

Australia’s own champion mare Winx won her 23rdconsecutive race, blazing down the track at Randwick to claim the Chipping Norton Stakes by a massive eight lengths. Described by the global racing press as “the fastest racehorse in the world,” Winx has surpassed the record of the unbeaten Black Caviar  with this her 16thAustralian Group 1 win. Taking her career earnings to an estimated $16 million, this critical win has left fans and pundits discussing whether she’ll make an appearance at this year’s Royal Ascot.

Winx has also been tipped to be a contender in the Queen Anne Stakes at the iconic British meet in June; however, a recent statement released by her trainer Chris Waller will disappoint racing fans in the U.K. who are hoping to see her work her magic in Berkshire. Waller, along with jockey Hugh Bowman and Winx’s owners Debbie Kepitis, Richard Treweeke and Peter Tighe, have decided to keep the history-making six-year-old on home turf for the remainder of the season.

In the statement, Waller explained that the “diverse range of matters to be considered, from well-being risks associated with travel to season changes” played a decisive role in the team’s decision. Admitting that the mare is in her “twilight phase,” Waller’s “responsibility to carefully manage her career” has led to “in-depth dialogue” between himself and Winx’s owners, and they believe the best course of action will be to keep her at home down under.

Winx will run in the $4 million-dollar prize Queen Elizabeth Stakes taking place at Randwick on 14thApril where is she is hotly tipped by bookmakers Unibet to win the meet and defend her 2017 title. This will be an attempt at a 25-straight win, following the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill. The team also hopes to keep her racing throughout the spring, with a view to running for the prestigious Cox Plate on Saturday, 24thOctober at Moonee Valley Racecourse. A three-time consecutive winner at this meet, Winx broke records last year with the 2017 plate, and if she were to win again during 2018, it would be a feat unprecedented in the racing world.
