Red Tracer wins her first Group I in the $500,000 Tattersalls Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm

Red Tracer finally broken her Group One drought, winning the $500,000 Tattersall’s Tiara (1,400m) at Eagle Farm in Brisbane.

Few people would begrudge the Chris Waller-trained mare her moment in the sun as she has been among the most honest mares in the country in recent seasons.

Despite racing wide, Red Tracer dashed clear under Nash Rawiller to score by 2-1/4 lengths from fellow Sydney mare Streama ($4.40), while Floria ($21) was a short head away third.

“Money aside, there’s no better feeling than winning a race like this,” Waller said.

“Everyone knows she’s been around the mark in a number of top-class races throughout her career and she’s a very good horse.

“There’s no horse more deserving than her and I don’t think there would be a person here who would deny her that.”

Red Tracer came within a whisker of her maiden Group One when second in both the Coolmore Classic and Queen Of The Turf Stakes in the autumn.

But after winning another Dane Ripper Stakes in Brisbane a fortnight ago, she was primed to improve on her fourth in last year’s Tiara in emphatic fashion.

“She was by far the superior horse on the day, which in what was a very good race,” Rawiller said.

“That was by far her most convincing win when I’ve been on her.”

The Tiara was the final Group One of the season and allowed Waller to take the national honour of most wins with nine.

The man who is on the verge of breaking the Sydney training record prepared his nine Group Ones with eight different horses; Shoot Out being the only multiple winner among them.

“It’s a good overall effort, just an amazing season and it will be good to take time and look back,” Waller said.

“It’s not made possible by me, it’s made possible by everyone in the team and there’s no weak links – everyone does their job and we’re proud of our success.”

Hugh Bowman said Streama, who was coming off a bold third in the Stradbroke, said he would have preferred to get away from the fence but admitted she had her chance.

Streama’s stable-mate Skyerush tossed Blake Shinn on her way to the barrier but was cleared to run. She made her run with Red Tracer in the straight but could do no better than fourth.
