Barrier Trial

by Pup

When the gates crash back and the thoroughbreds fly
the feeling is there that I'll touch the sky.
The thunder of hooves and the jostling for space
are the thoughts on my mind as I settle the pace.

I hold her back and sit in tight
as the leaders pull fierce and try to take flight.
As I judge the speed and consider the course
there's not much room between each horse.

I round the turn and know that it's time
to make my move and position my line.
"Don't go in so close just give yourself space"
is a memory that holds from the start of the race.

But the start of the race was not minutes ago
but twenty long years since those words were first spoke.
To ride with him near is a comforting feel
to know he is there as I ride hands and heel.

The filly strides through and lays back her ears
I'll click at her quiet and see if she hears.
The gap opens up and there's room just for one
as she jumps forward quick to take up the run.

The post is there, a furlong away,
but they won't catch her now, she's too quick on the day.
"Good ride" they call "Not bad for a start"
If only they knew what I felt in my heart.

I rode her yes, but it wasn't just me
the others were there, I almost could see.
Thanks to you both, I know that you care
I couldn't have won if you hadn't been there.

When first that they heard I was at David's side
their thoughts of me, they just couldn't hide.
"You won't have the guts you'll just think of him
every time that a boy cops a kick on the chin".

Yes I do sometimes wonder, if when that I ride,
if a horse goes down, is it my turn to die?
But it's not that I'm scared, what's the worst that can be?
We'll all be together, that's what I see.
