Taatletail has the zip to cope with the 1000 Guineas

Thoroughbred fillies are better equipped than colts in coping with certain linebreeding inconsistencies.

Colts can be completely disorientated in certain circumstances, but in the same situations the fillies cope quite admirably.

Take the Rogerson-Autridge representative Taatletail (Faltaat—Defensive Lady, by Defensive Play), who won the Group III Highview Stakes, a set weight 1200m event for the three-year-old fillies at the Hawke’s Bay fixture transferred to Otaki, as a prime example.

Taatletail retained an unbeaten record from three starts in taking the Highview Stakes, and earned early favouritism for the 1600m New Zealand One Thousand Guineas at Riccarton in early November.

Taatletail is linebred up front to the great stallion Mr Prospector through two sons. The first is through Taatletail’s sire Faltaat and the second is carried in the damsire line through Defensive Play.

Under linebreeding principles Mr Prospector carried through sons in the second and fifth removes could be taboo in a colt but filles like Taatletail are untroubled by this presence.

This possibly relates to the Marion Haun X Factor principles whereby certain genetic presences can only be transmitted through a female or a stallion’s daughter. The function is thwarted through a son.

A question is posed. Would a Taatletail brother be as effective as his sister?

Taatletail carries another presence, which used to cause breeders palpitations when he was carried in pedigrees.

This was Danzatore (Northern Dancer-Shake A Leg, by Raise A Native), who was inbred to Native Dancer.

This duplication was a little close up in the Danzatore pedigree to be a great asset when planning matings.

With time, as Danzatore was set back an extra remove in pedigrees, the Native Dancer factor was freed up and was able to effervesce.

Consequently these days when Danzatore is seen in the third remove and beyond in family trees he has become a wonderful genetic asset.

Taatletail is consequently blessed with Native Dancer twice in Faaltat and three times in Defensive Lady, all being within the Highview Stakes winner’s first six generations.

Taatletail has some lovely duplications outside the Mr Prospector duo. There are three sex balanced Raise A Native strains, Nearco multiples galore with a female line, a Nashua triple and three La Troienne factors. It just goes on and on.

The Taatletail female tail line hails from an 1872 English mare Etiquette, who was imported to New Zealand.

A daughter Rubino produced a super galloper Machine Gun just 100 years ago.

Taatletail’s sixth dam Gold Ann was the grandam to the Caulfield Cup winner Analight and fourth dam Bellota, who annexed the Avondale Cup, produced Rocket Racer (Perth Cup) and Starzaan (AJC Oaks).

The two Mr Prospector factors may give Taatletail a considerable advantage if there’s unsettled underfoot conditions in the lead up races to the 1000 Guineas.

That Mr Prospector blood emanating from the No 13 family’s Frizette has an ongoing flair to cope with rain affected ground, which may trouble her adversaries.

The dosage procedure, which can help measure aptitude, suggests that Taatletail has a sprinter-miler focus.

Mind you, dosage doesn’t measure a trainer’s flair to develop racing potential in a quality performer. The Rogerson-Autridge training combination could probably coach her into middle distance assignments if necessary.

In the meantime watch Taatletail’s performances in the One Thousand Guineas preludes.
