Brilliant Kapsdan has stout pedigree overtones

The dazzling Matamata filly Kapsdan (Kaapstad—Danaselvam, by Danehill), unbeaten in three starts to date, reads more like a 1600m type rather than a precocious juvenile.

This observation hinges on her sire Kaapstad (Sir Tristram-Eight Carat, by Pieces Of Eight), whose stock tend to have a middle distance forte.

Just as we are told than one swallow a doesn’t make a summer, in the thoroughbred arena we must never judge a galloper on one parent only.

Kaapstad generally leaves gallopers with a middle distance aptitude but Kapsdan’s dam the Australian mare Danaselvam boasts a strong speed presence and a truly powerful classic count representing “class.”

From the Walker yard at Matamata, Kapsdan won her first race, an 800m scurry at Pukekohe on heavy ground on September 13 and followed with another 800m success on a heavy track after a slow beginning at Ellerslie on October 4. Then followed a hollow three-length victory over the metric half mile on a firm Avondale footing on November 1.

Where spring and early two-year-old form is concerned certain trainers have the flair to tong up youngsters.

In this category Graeme Sanders, Jim Campin, Graeme Rogerson and company readily come to mind and they are now joined by Kapsdan’s youthful mentor Mark Walker. On form to date Kapsdan should continue to assert herself as the juveniles compete over 1200m in midsummer competition.

Breeders have much to learn by studying the Kapsdan bloodlines. The youngster carries a fast growing nick involving the mighty Sir Tristram over a Danehill daughter.

Within the first six generations there are multiples involving Mahmoud, Man O’War, Selene, Plucky Liege and the half siblings Menow and Alcibiades.

The Kapsdan female tail line descends directly from the great 1901 matron Pretty Polly (Gallinule-Admiration, by Saraband), representing the No 14C Bobinsky notation.

This particular Kapsdan strain has numerous stakewinners in its ranks without being as prolific as others in the clan.

Sixth dam Cyclorama was a sister to Princess Vera, who won the Queen Mary Stakes.

Fourth dam Satu went to France where she left the top 1978 European juvenile Sigy (Gr I Prix de la Abage de Longchamp).

Satu’s daughter Satire went to England and in turn her daughter Assentia went to Australia where she won a listed race and foaled Danaselvam (Kapsdan’s mother), who came to New Zealand. Kapsdan carries at least seven super influential No 14C Pretty Polly strains and another five representing the great mare Lavendula II. These are wonderful genetic assets.

Kaapstad is linebred to the brother and sister Royal Charger and Tessa Gillian and there’s a third line in Danaselvam. There’s a strong Hyperion and Feola factor in the first six generations.

Taken all round Kapsdan is blessed with quite spectacular bloodlines and if she’s not overtaxed she should continue to match the country’s best as her juvenile season develops.

Of course, she’s from the same juvenile environment, which produced last term’s all conquering stars King’s Chapel and Maroofity.
