Scanning the many pedigrees of major Australasian stakes winners gathered over the last few years to 8 generations, I looked for multiple linebreeding to firstly Teddy then to Gainsborough (sire of Hyperion) himself. Gainsborough and Teddy share a number of prepotent names as well as the same female line that seems to spark when brought together.
Gainsborough is by Bayardo, a son of Bay Ronald (dam 2x2 Galopin/Sterling) out of Galicia by Galopin out of Isoletta by Sterling’s son Isonomy. Gainsborough’s dam Rosedrop is by St Frusquin, a son of St Simon (Galopin – St Angela) out of Rosaline by Trenton out of Rosalys by Bend Or out of a daughter of May Queen.
Teddy is by Ajax, a son of Flying Fox, the latter by Orme by a son of Bend Or out of St Simon’s full sister Angelica. Flying Fox’s damsire is Galopin. Teddy’s dam Rondeau is by Bay Ronald out of Doremi by Bend Or out of May Queen’s daughter Lady Emily. This makes Rosalys and Doremi ¾ sisters on the bottom female lines of both Gainsborough and Teddy.
Teddy is particularly prepotent through his two sons and full siblings Bull Dog and Sir Gallahad III. Their dam Plucky Liege brings in Musket, Lord Clifden and Macaroni and another line of St Simon to compliment these lines in Gainsborough.
St Simon and Bay Ronald are particularly powerful together. St Simon is by Galopin out of St Angela by King Tom out of Adeline by Ion out of Little Fairy by Hornsea. Bay Ronald’s dam Black Duchess is by Galopin’s son Galliard out of Black Corrie by Birdcatcher’s grandson Sterling out of the Wild Dayrell Mare who carries Ion/Bay Middleton/Hornsea 2x3x2. Bay Middleton is carried as grand-damsire of Galopin’s dam.
Other tie-ups are Galopin’s sire Vedette who is by Voltigeur out of a Birdcatcher mare. Voltigeur is a full brother to Volley carried in Bay Ronald’s sire Hampton. Galopin’s granddam Merope has a ¾ brother Velocipede whom appears as sire of Hornsea. King Tom also meets his half brother Rataplan.
These then are the common threads that bind Teddy and Gainsborough together. The first pedigree that I looked at was of course Sunline, how could I not. Her sire Desert Sun has lines of Hyperion (Gainsborough), Sir Gallahad III (Teddy), Mah Mahal (Gainsborough) and various Gainsborough and Teddy lines throughout his pedigree. Sunline’s dam Songline compliments Desert Sun with Bull Dog, Hyperion and further strains of Teddy/Gainsborough.
However, the unexpected and riveting aspect of Sunline’s pedigree that may provide the spark is the linebreeding to ¾ siblings Pardal and Tellaris and more importantly the full sisters Crepuscule and Mieuxce Rouge. I am a big fan of this type of linebreeding but imagine my unexpected sheer delight upon inspecting these 4 ancestors and finding further reinforcement of the 2 ancestors focused upon in this article.
Pardal and Tellaris are out of Adargatis who is by Teddy’s important son Asterus. The full sisters Crepuscule and Mieuxce Rouge are out of Red Sunset by Gainsborough’s son Solario out of Dulce II by Teddy’s son Asterus.
Asterus is an interesting son of Teddy. His dam Astrella contributes lines of reinforcing ancestors seen in Gainsborough and Teddy with Astrella by Verdun, a grandson of St Simon out of Saint Astra by Hampton’s son Ladas out of Saint Celestra by Galopin’s son St Angelo.
Both Teddy and Gainsborough have been wonderful stamina sources and Teddy has been a great foil for Gainsborough. Zabeel is a case in point. His background lines of Gainsborough and Teddy are especially powerful along his female line of descent.
Valderna is by Val De Loir whose damsire Sunny Boy is 3x3x3 Teddy/Gainsborough (twice). Valderna is out of Derna by Sunny Boy (once again) out of Miss Barberie who carries Teddy 3x4.
This explosive mix harmonised with the mare Passefleur. The result, G1 winner Jezabeel. Passefleur is by Vice Regal whose dam Kind Regards is by Le Filou, ¾ sibling to Zabeel’s 5th dam Vaneuse (Vatellor – Diseuse). Vatellor and Diseuse both have Teddy as their damsire. Kind Regard’s dam Waft is 4x4 Gainsborough. Jezabeel’s 3rd dam Mirfin adds the final touch with a 4x5x5 cross of Gainsborough/Teddy/Gainsborough.
Another high class daughter of Zabeel is Champagne. Her dam L’Quiz is by L’Enjoleur, a son of Buckpasser (4x4 Teddy via Bull Dog and La Troienne) out of Fanfreluche who carries Gainsborough influences Hyperion and Mahmoud 4x4 with a line of Gallant Fox (Teddy) also in the 4th generation. L’Quiz’s dam Basin is 4x4 Sir Gallahad (Teddy). Champagne is of course a full sister to St Reims.
What would happen if Zabeel met Sunline? Well this has already happened, the resultant colt is lot 411 in the 2007 Premier Sale at Karaka. Imagine the potential explosive mix of NZ’s premier sire and champion mare melding all these Teddy/Gainsborough lines into one pedigree.
The top class race mare Cinder Bella is by Victory Dance. A son of Sadler’s Wells, his dam Tree Of Knowledge is by Sassafras (Gainsborough 5x5x5) out of Sensibility by Hail To Reason (5x4 Gainsborough/Teddy). Cinder Bella’s dam Lucky Jewel is by Lucky Ring, he a son of Auction Ring whose granddam Beadah is by Djeddah (3x3 Teddy) out of Beauty Spot by Teddy’s son Bull Dog. Lucky Jewel’s dam Tribal Honour carries further reinforcing lines including Gainsborough 5x5 via her dam Birthright.
Another sire in this vein is Rhythm. His daughter Ethereal, winner of the G1 Melbourne Cup benefited from his input as her dam Romanee Conti is well represented with these lines, especially through her dam Richebourg who is by Vice Regal out of a mare by Wilkes. The latter is a huge influence in Australasian pedigrees and just happens to be 4x4x3 to Gainsborough/Gainsborough/Teddy.
Kings Chapel, the multiple G1 winning son of King Of Kings also meets the criteria. King Of Kings is by Sadler’s Wells whose dam Fairy Bridge is resplendent in Teddy lines, particularly through Bold Reason (dam Lalun is 4x4 Teddy). King Of King’s dam Zummerudd carries numerous lines of both Teddy/Gainsborough with particular emphasis on Bull Dog and Owen Tudor 4x4. Owen Tudor is bred Gainsborough/Teddy 2x3.
King Chapel’s dam Lower Chapel is bred in RF fashion 4x4 to Mixed Marriage who is by Owen Tudor’s son Tudor Minstrel. Damsire of Lower Chapel is Known Fact (granddam Mixed Marriage) who injects three lines of Bull Dog 5x5x5.
A Listed race performer who carried a strong Gainsborough and Teddy tie up is Sting Leica Bee. By Exploding Prospect out of Countess Cassius by Clay Hero out of Ayabar by Aythorpe out of Agbar by Silver Dream out of Liliana by Pharamond out of Oleanda by Pink Flower out of Dulce II, she is very much aggressively outbred to 8 generations. Her 6th dam Dulce II was the best producing female of her immediate damline. By Asterus, the important son of Teddy as mentioned above, her dam Dorina also carried a background of Bend Or and St Simon close up.
Her daughter Oleanda was by Pink Flower who carried Hampton, St Simon, Bend Or, St Simon, Bend Or, Bend Or, Hampton and St Simon 5x5x5x5x5x5x4x4.
Liliana was by Pharamond who contributed little of the above lines.
Agbar was by Silver Dream who introduced Gainsborough 5x5x5 along with Teddy 6x4. Her daughter Ayabar was by Aythorpe whose sire Ridan was by Nantallah, 4x4 to Teddy’s son Sir Gallahad III. Aythorpe’s dam Nana’s Girl brought in further infusions of Gainsborough 6x6x5.
Countess Cassius was by Clay Hero whose sire Proud Knight was 6x6x7x6x7x6 Gainsborough and carried a line of Teddy (via Wilkes, paternal grandsire of Proud Knight). Clay Hero’s dam Cameo Belle was a descent of Gainsborough.
Countess Cassius was bred to Exploding Prospect who carried Teddy 5x6x6x6x7 via his sire Miswaki whilst his dam Seasons Past was 5x6x6 Gainsborough and carried a line of Teddy.
