American Pharoah last year became the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed completed the series sweep in 1978. Will this year’s crop contain a thoroughbred that can emulate last season’s hero and become the 12th Triple Crown winner.

The first race of the series, the 142nd Kentucky Derby, is run at Churchill Downs on Saturday May 7th. The Kentucky Derby is known as “the greatest 2 minutes in sport” and is watched by millions of people around the world. Elite thoroughbreds from all over America, and sometimes from further afield, travel to compete in this historic race.

There is no standout performer this year but a number who could conceivably go on to win the “Run to the Roses”. Mohaymen is the likely favourite after his stunning performance in the Holly Bull Stakes. The son of Tapit has impressed most experts this season and looks to be the one to beat. Undefeated Nyquist was last season’s outstanding 2YO colt and is another strong contender, however many experts believe his stamina may be found out in the final furlong.

Nyquist, a son of Uncle Mo, brilliantly won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile but the fast finishing closer that day was Swipe, a strapping son of Birdstone, who heads to the Kentucky Derby with a big chance of winning. Brody’s Cause is another who could surprise with his late closing speed. This year’s event promises to be an intriguing race and will undoubtedly produce a fairytale ending for one lucky group of owners.

At this moment in mid-February, there is still a way to go before the Derby field takes its final shape. The Fountain of Youth, San Felipe, Louisiana Derby and Florida Derby are all critical lead up races and later the Wood Memorial, Blue Grass and Santa Anita Derby can have a large influence on the final field.
