Maximum Security wins San Diego Hcp at Del Mar
Maximum Security wins the G2 San Diego Hcp from the brave Midcourt at Del Mar Racetrack in the US.

Maximum Security, a champion in the horse racing world, won the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap by a nose. It was a rather unpredictable race, even though we first believed that Maximum Security had it all under control. However, the 2nd-placed Midcourt made headway and led the race for some time, before Maximum Security used every ounce of strength in the stretch and took home the trophy.

There has been a lot of noise around Maximum Security over the last couple of months, and some people were wondering whether this performance was in any way related to an event that happened a couple of months prior to the San Diego Handicap. Maximum Security’s (now former) trainer, Jason Servis was among the 27 people indicted for an alleged horse doping scheme.

This happened after Maximum Security won the legendary Kentucky Derby, but was later disqualified for interference. Maximum Security later won the prestigious inaugural run of the Saudi Cup, and as a champion, received $10 million.

While the performance did bring the win to Maximum security, we can’t say our expectations were met. This all might have something to do with the recent change of trainers, and jockeys — after the doping scandal, Maximum Security was moved to Bob Baffert’s barn and his regular jockey, Luis Saez, was replaced by Abel Cedillo for this occasion.

In any case, it was a great comeback for Maximum Security, as he managed to make it back to the Top 5 of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA)

About Maximum Security

Maximum Security is a four-year-old Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2019, he was named the American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse. Maximum Security obtained that title after winning the Haskell Invitational, Cigar Mile, Bold Rules Handicap, and Florida Derby.

Even though he started his career relatively late due to unspecified physical issues, he managed to win his maiden claiming race. In 2019, Maximum Security started a three-year-old campaign during which he won several races and managed to obtain 100 points in the Road to Kentucky Derby. That instantly qualified him for the Kentucky Derby.

However, after his disqualification from the Kentucky Derby, his owners decided not to enter him in the other two parts of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing — Preakness and Belmont Stakes. But, the horse made a strong return, won 4 races, and received the title of the American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse.

After the doping scandal, Maximum Security came back on the racecourse and continued to strive for the win. Having won the San Diego Handicap, we can say that Maximum Security is back, and hopefully, we will see more of him and his stellar performances in the future.
