Site Tips
To enhance your experience at Thoroughbred Village please take note of the following hints and guidelines.
Colour Depth
The colour scheme used in Thoroughbred Village is optimized for "True Colour" (Thousands of Colours). Make sure that your computer monitor is set to this colour depth.
Screen Resolution
The minimum recommended screen resolution is 800x600, however some users prefer even higher resolutions.
Village Forums
The large number of messages on our forums has made it somewhat impractical for users to download the entire database each time a "return to main index" is requested. Thus, in order to considerably increase the index's listing speed you should set your Preferences according to the regularity of your visits. For example, if you are a regular (daily) visitor, you could set Preferences to list messages posted in the last 2 weeks. Alternatively, less frequent visitors should set their Preferences to longer durations (eg; 1 month). Hit "View Message Index" to display the message index using your new settings. Paying attention to Preferences will not only save you time, but lessen the load on the forum during busy periods.
Emoticons. There are many different emoticons for you to use to help you convey your messages in the precise tone that you intended. Emoticons (or smilies, as we like to call them) are small graphical images that are used to convey an emotion or feeling. Click here to learn all about our emoticons and view the current list. Remember to use them sparingly, as their overuse can be annoying to some viewers.

Refresh/Reload
When modern internet browsers access a web site, much of the page information retrieved is stored in a special place on your computer's hard disk so that the next time you visit the site, the page content is loaded from the computer rather than downloaded again via the internet. This process is called "cacheing" and is useful for accessing static web pages that are rarely updated, but can be a problem when accessing dynamic sites such as Thoroughbred Village where page content stored in cache can quickly become out of date. If you suspect that cacheing is a problem on your system, one way to circumvent it is to routinely press Refresh or Reload on your browser when first entering Thoroughbred Village. This will retrieve the latest information from the web site. On occasions when refreshing page content does not appear to work, manually emptying your browser's cache is usually sufficient to enforce data retrieval from the web site. Alternatively, you can set the preferences in many browsers to automatically update web content at the beginning of each session.

Pedigree Analysis Tools
The best pedigree analysis tools are available at Thoroughbred Village. We have provided, on the left-hand side panel, the three most useful sites for helping your research into local and international bloodlines. The Australian Stud Book site is the top of the pile when it comes to looking up pedigrees, an innovative and groundbreaking site. The New Zealand Stud Book site has just been launched and provides much needed information on Kiwi bloodlines. When international pedigree research is needed, the Del Mar site is excellent and provides additional tools that make your research even more informative, in particular the invaluable "female family" option. These three sites comprise a comprehensive package to help you find the most relevant information in the fastest possible way. We have organized the windows so that you can set each of them up on your screen simultaneously. Try multitasking your pedigree research by leaping from one screen to the other, it is amazing the insights that can be gained with such a diverse array of tools.
