Interesting Stakes winners at Flemington and Randwick herald an exciting Spring.

Charlie Boy emerged as a Caulfield Guineas contender with an impressive win against a crack field in the Group Two Danehill Stakes at Flemington.

One of last season’s most promising juveniles, Charlie Boy showed he’d come back stronger as a three-year-old by winning the Danehill by almost a length.

Allowed to find his feet early by Scobie Breasley Medallist Michael Rodd, Charlie Boy sat behind the inside division of the field before unleashing a sharp burst on the inside of the field over the last 100 metres.

Charlie Boy was purchased by Triple Crown Syndications for $80,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

He is the first named foal to date for his dam, the unraced Falbrav mare Maritime.

A daughter of Flight Stakes winner Pontal Lass, Maritime is a half sister to the Wakeful Stakes winner Quays – in turn the dam of group performer I Think I Do.

As it stands Charlie Boy has already earned his connections over $290,000 from just seven starts, not bad considering he cost just $80,000 at the Gold Coast.

Commanding Jewel added another group race win to her impressive record when she proved too good in Saturday’s Group Two Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington.

With a sustained sprint in the straight, Commanding Jewel reeled in the leaders and held off fellow Magic Millions graduate Catkins to win by a half length.

A $205,000 purchase for Brad Spicer from the draft of Vinery Stud at the 2011 Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Commanding Jewel is trained by Leon Corstens and was ridden to victory by Ben Melham.

Corstens said the mare could have her next start in the Group One Toorak Handicap with plenty of upcoming options for the blue blooded four-year-old.

A winner of four races, including the Group One Thousand Guineas last spring, Commanding Jewel has earned over $540,000 for her connections and her potential broodmare value would have to be in seven figures.

Commanding Jewel is a three quarter sister to the unbeaten champion Atlantic Jewel – a member of the Mark Kavanagh stable who on Saturday will chase nine straight wins.

They are both from the Melbourne winner Zabeel mare Regard, a mare who tragically produced just two foals before her premature death.

The family of the Jewels is one know well to Magic Millions. As well as selling both Group One winners, the Gold Coast was also the venue of the sale of Regard as a yearling and broodmare (in foal to Atlantic Jewel) as well as Regard’s ndam, the Nashwan import Nanshan.

Aussies Love Sport is the fourth individual group winner for the grand producing Unbridled’s Song mare Miss Jakeo.

Miss Jakeo, a Brisbane winner at two and daughter of Group One winner Lady Jakeo, is also the dam of Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis as well as group three winners Miss Judgement and Fifth Avenue Lady.

Aussies Love Sport is the 106th individual stakes winner for champion Arrowfield Stud based sire Redoute’s Choice – sire of MM stars including Group One winners Redoute’s Dancer, Stratum, Snitzel, Melito, Lotteria, Gallica, Wylie Hall, Cheeky Choice, Royal Descent and Fashions Afield.

Kalahaar scored a breakthrough stakes win in Saturday’s listed Farnley Stakes in Perth and in doing so booked a trip to the Kalgoorlie Cup Carnival.

In beating home fellow Magic Millions graduate Settle Strada, who was chasing five straight stakes wins, Kalahaar settled back and come home strongly to beat the favourite by about a length.

Trainer Steve Wolfe said Kalahaar, a $120,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase from Yarraman Park, deserved his first stakes success after a string of excellent runs without much luck.

Now a seven time winner, and six times placed, from 17 starts, Kalahaar has earned over $327,000 and looks one of the most promising gallopers of Western Australia.

The 54th individual stakes winner for star sire Choisir, Kalahaar is one of four winners for the 100 per cent winner producer Kalatiara.

One of a select group of mares to have group races in Australia and the United States, Kalatiara is by former champion WA based sire Metal Storm and winner of eight races.

Among those wins was the Group Two Western Australian Guineas and a listed Burgess Queen Stakes before a stint in America where she won the Group Three Royal Heroine Stakes at Hollywood Park.

A sister to stakes winner Kentiara, VRC Oaks placegetter Antique (dam of two stakes winners) and the dam of Perth Cup winner Guest Wing, Kalatiara hails from the family of sires West Point, Kenvain and Rigoletto.
